COMMUNITY COMES THROUGH WITH HOLIDAY HELP
The economy is struggling, but support for Volunteers of America Delaware Valley is surging.
Individuals, businesses, organizations, politicians and institutions in our communities are helping us help men, women and children during the holidays.
Nana Gillett-Spio, president of the Sneaker Boxx on Route 130 in Pennsauken NJ, stepped up with free footwear for men living in our Aletha Wright Vision of Hope Center in Camden NJ. He brought the sneakers and shoes to the center on December 22 and helped the guys make their selections.
“I want to give directly to the people who need it,” he said.
In other examples of community support, Citizens Bank came through with 100 “Stockings of Hope” – each filled with practical gifts for folks of all ages in our programs. Haddonfield Friends School in Haddonfield, NJ has adopted our Anna Sample Complex. And the Jubilate Deo Chorale & Orchestra, Inc. gifted our clients with 20 free tickets to their December 20 Christmas concert at Paul VI High School in Haddon Township, NJ.
Given the spirit of the concert and the season, “we were happy to bring it to as many people as we can,” said Mary Hartman, office manager of the chorale.
Meanwhile, US Rep. Robert E. Andrews, D-NJ, and NJ Assembly members Lewis Greenwald and Pamela Lampett, as well as their staffers, contributed to our food drive.
Staff at the Bridgewater, NJ dental office of Dr. Drew Fairweather collected and donated clothing, toys and personal care products for our Agape House family shelter in Somerville NJ, and employees at the International Paper facilities in Barrington and Bellmawr, NJ collected and donated more than 60 “gently used” winter coats for men, women and children.
Temple Emanuel in Cherry Hill NJ; the Suburban Church Bowling League in Cherry Hill NJ; the Blank Rome law firm in Merchantville, NJ; McMillan’s Bakery in Haddon Township NJ and Kenmac Flowers Inc. in Collingswood NJ also made significant contributions to our programs and the people we serve.
“We can’t say enough about this kind of support, especially at this time of year,” said James Wynn, director of development at Volunteers of America Delaware Valley.
