‘FUTURE TEACHERS’ GET BEHIND OPERATION BACKPACK

The Future Teachers of America Club of Washington Township High School in New Jersey donated a total of 30 backpacks and 6 boxes filled with school supplies to our Operation Backpack campaign.

The club chose Operation Backpack as its first community service project designed to specifically benefit school children. The effort is led by Caitlin Donahue, club president for 2009-10.

The club sent out flyers to elementary students in the township school district's seven elementary schools and placed drop off boxes in each elementary and high school main office.

A club member, Greg Furman, created commercials through his telecommunications class. The commercials were aired in the high school

The club also sent out a district-wide email to all faculty and staff encouraging their participation. This resulted in a donation of three filled backpacks; a $300 individual donation; a $110 donation from an elementary school ‘staff dress down day;’ and high school student involvement for extra credit.

Also, a club in one of the school district's middle schools (Future Act) donated $60 and also collected supplies.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Future Teachers of America Club at Washington Township High School,” said James Wynn, development director of Volunteers of America Delaware Valley. “This partnership means that more kids in need will be ready to learn on the first day of school.”
