CELEBRATING THE HOLIDAYS AT PROMISE
Clients in PROMISE (Program for Returning Offenders with Mental Illness Safely and Effectively) were treated to a holiday buffet on December 11.About 25 people, including staff, family members and PROMISE clients living in our Garrett House, Fletcher House and supportive living programs, attended the luncheon at PROMISE in downtown Camden, NJ.
On the menu: turkey, stuffing, veggies, salads, homemade mashed potatoes
and homemade fresh cranberry sauce. Not to mention an array of fabulous desserts.
“So many of our clients, especially in PROMISE, don’t have the opportunity to go home and be with family and friends and loved ones, like the rest of us,” Program Director Richard White said. “This is just our way of bringing the holidays to them.”
Karl Green, who has been living at Fletcher House for three weeks, was pleased with the luncheon – and with the PROMISE program.
“It’s very professional, and everyone treats me with respect, and vice-versa,” said Green, 27. “I would just like to show my gratitude for this lunch offering.”
Staff also enjoyed themselves.
“It’s important to have are clients come together as one unit and share the day together and be able to know that people care about them and will work with them. I think it’s nice for us to show our appreciation for them, too,” said Cindy MacMillan, treatment specialist.
Meanwhile, aftercare treatment specialist Lara Farrokh, said “buttermilk and love” are the secret ingredients for her holiday mashed potatoes.
The luncheon “is fun, it gets us into the spirit, too, said Farrokh, who also made the fresh cranberry sauce.
And the secret ingredient in the latter?
“Maple syrup and heart,” Farrokh said. “You’ve got to have heart.”
